Stanley Force
I was here twice in a week in late September and forgot to add a blog!! The first time I was on my own and had headed there for a quick walk en-route to an evening job on Scafell Pike. The second time, however, was in the company of Phil and Charles and was a much more relaxed and at times hilarious wander.
We started from Birker Fell, approaching Stanley Ghyll from the north. The main falls are in a 50m deep gorge so care must be taken as you approach, even when all three of you are at an age where people may feel you've had enough of a good life already!! Charles in particular is another waterfall aficionado and between us we must have taken a picture of every angle of every piece of moving water in the gorge, from a trickle to the main cascade.
Having reached the end of the gorge as it opens out into the Eskdale Valley we headed east and took in Gill Force on the River Esk (more volume of water than Stanley Force, but a more gentle set of falls given the width of the river at that point).
Stanley Force is a must-see - it is, however, not easy to combine with other must-see falls on a full day's walk in the hills so is best taken in as a short in/out wander (eg if on holiday on a day when other activities are planned) or on a more relaxed day taking in other sights in this part of Eskdale (eg we could combine this with a walk to Devoke Water, which has great all-round views, along with Birker Force, a lovely waterfall not too far away).
