One of my favourite walks from Buttermere

This walk is my starting recommendation for a Buttermere wander - one stunning high fall, plus two more very different sets of falls and cascades, plus a terrific ridge walk with several summits to tick off, plus iconic Alfred Wainwright locations, plus great views along the way, plus a lakeside walk to conclude the day. Could you ask for more??

I'm a little behind with my blogs, so this was almost two weeks ago, on a really crisp and cold day, with some wind up high, but with beautiful sunshine when it arrived. From Buttermere we first go to Scale Force, the stunning high fall, and then keep going into the hills up Scale Beck, where the waterfalls continue. We then head for the tops, eventually reaching just over 800m, taking in one of those terrific rolling ridge walks that you just wish would never end. It was chilly on top but the views were stunning.

Eventually it's time to head down a little, but not all the way, and we take our time visiting two of Alfred Wainwright's favourite places - the summit of Haystacks and nearby Innominate Tarn (see main picture). For the next kilometre we were passed, in ones and twos, and then a final group of six, by local Mountain Rescue personnel heading for an injured walker somewhere behind us, including two of them carrying stretchers. We thanked them as they rushed past.

By now we'd been out for several hours, and it was time to finally lose significant height, achieved (once we'd visited the picture-taking magnet of Warnscale Bothy) by walking alongside the waterfalls and pools of Warnscale Beck (where in the summer we'd be stopping to dip our toes, but not today). We eventually arrived back down at Buttermere for our final walk along the lake to the village.

There are plenty of other options around Buttermere but I can't think of any to match this walk.
