Birks Bridge

Two-thirds of a longer walk, this walk was perfect last week for one of those shorter, mixed-weather days. From Jubilee Bridge at the eastern end of Eskdale (well worth a visit in its own right) we hiked up Harter Fell (always nice to tick off a summit!), passing some delightful waterfalls enroute. From here we headed down to the Duddon Valley, aiming for Birks Bridge, getting caught in a pretty torrential hail shower on the way, one that really tested our kit and made the rest of the route even wetter than it had been earlier.
Birks Bridge is a great place to visit, the bridge crossing the River Duddon at the point of a series of stunning falls where the route of the river narrows considerably. It's one of those places where it's difficult to finally put your camera away!!
From here we headed further up the Duddon Valley, following the river for much of it, before heading up to the Hardknott Pass. From the top of the pass we walked back down to Eskdale, taking in a delightful series of falls before heading off to walk through the remains of the Roman fort and back to our vehicles to dry off.
